Our Impact in Schools and Institutions
For generations, school kitchens ran on firewood and smoke. We set out to change that, one kitchen at a time. Then we built the tools to prove it is working.

Before
Walk into most school kitchens in Kenya a few years ago and you would find the same thing. Open fires. Stacks of firewood. Cooks working through smoke to feed hundreds, sometimes thousands, of learners every day. It was normal. It should never have been.

Firewood is bought by the lorry, every term, at prices schools do not control. A large share of the feeding budget went up in smoke.
Cooks spent their days in thick smoke and heat, breathing what the fire gave back. The kitchen was the most dangerous room in the school.
Every meal took trees with it. Feeding thousands of learners a day meant clearing forests that took decades to grow.
Open fires, three stones and blackened walls lose heat in every direction. Schools paid for energy that simply disappeared.

The shift
Ecobora built institutional cookstoves that run on solar and grid electricity. No firewood. No smoke. No trees cut to make lunch. Kitchens became clean, cooks became safer, and schools could plan their energy instead of hauling it in by the lorry.
Measured
Institutions had never been able to see their cooking energy. A meal could be ready in forty minutes while the stove stayed on for an hour. Nobody knew, so nobody could fix it. We built Emissionfy and UPISHI so every kitchen finally can.

Lunch, Stove 2, Main Kitchen
Suggestion. Switching off at 40 minutes would save about 4 kWh on this meal. Set a 40 minute timer on UPISHI for lunch.
UPISHI records every cooking session, so a school knows exactly what it costs to cook breakfast, lunch and supper.
Daily, weekly and termly summaries by kitchen, stove and meal. Aggregated across one campus or a hundred.
Emissionfy spots stoves left on after food is ready, meals that take longer than they should, and patterns worth changing.
What we believe
No cook should have to breathe smoke to feed a child.
No school should have to cut a forest to serve lunch.
Clean energy should be measured, not assumed.
Every wasted minute on a stove is money a school could spend on learning.
The best solutions for Africa will be built in Africa.
Live installations
Real kitchens, real cooks, real meals. Every day in schools and institutions across East Africa.

Where we work
More than 100 institutions onboarded, with our engineering and support team based in Nairobi.
Bringing clean cooking and energy visibility to schools and institutions.
Extending the same stoves, meters and platform to new institutions.
Whether you run one school or a hundred, we will help you cook clean and see every unit of energy you use.
